4 DIY Hair Coloring Mistakes You’re Probably Regretting

We understand, we promise. While salons across the country were mandated to close, many of you went ahead with a little DIY at-home hair coloring experimenting. Seemed like a good idea at the time, right? However, now that the deed is done, you’re probably realizing just how much you love your Uxbridge salon, The Hair Studio!

Here is a look at the top four DIY coloring mistakes people make when having a go with at-home coloring.

Your color and the box color are not the same.

Whether the color came out too dark or too light, it’s hard to judge a book by its cover. Or, should we say a color by the box? Several factors go into achieving the desired color, and a box leaves all of those factors at the curb. For example, a stylist takes the time to listen and assess the current condition of your hair. Elements like your texture and the current color determine how a color will look after application.

Often, stylists combine more than one color, creating a customized blend that will result in exactly what you’re looking for. We’re mixologists if you will! If you’re not quite digging your boxed color, don’t fret, we can help.

DIY lightening seemed like a great idea.

Unfortunately, salons closed their doors during the two biggest seasons for hair lightening; spring and summer. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? If you grabbed the bleach, we’re assuming you’re more than regretting that decision. With luck, you achieved the lightness you were looking for without a green hue. With more luck, you didn’t damage your hair beyond repair.

On the other side, if luck wasn’t at your side, it’s time to head into The Hair Studio. The best way to repair bleach damage is to remove the damage. A trim (or cut) is the best way to get your hair back to a healthy status, and remember it will always grow back! While you’re visiting your stylist, ask for recommendations on products to further help repair any damage.

Distractions happen, but your color solution doesn’t care.

One of the biggest mistakes of at-home coloring is miscalculating the timing. While there are recommendations on the box, a color text is always the best choice. However, trying to achieve the perfect color with at-home distractions almost always proves a challenge.

If your processing time is not long enough, you might end up with hot roots (see below). On the other hand, if you left the color on too long, your roots could be darker than the rest of the color. No matter what, don’t try to lighten your roots! Come visit your Uxbridge salon and we’ll help you get your color just right!

Mismatching roots is not a trend.

While some of you colored your hair out of quarantine boredom, many others were tackling those dreadful gray roots. However, the biggest mistake when having a go at the grays is applying the color all at once. Sound familiar? If so, your roots are probably an entirely different color then the rest of your hair.

Another common occurrence is called hot roots. This coloring mishap occurs when the color you select is either a lighter shade, or contains more red hue than your current color. The result is some variation of orange lining to your scalp.
